How a piece starts

Most of what we draw starts with a wall that needs covering by Monday. A teacher rearranges a reading corner, a parent takes over the dining table for a birthday, somebody clears a kitchen tray and wants it to look like October. We sketch for those afternoons rather than for a showroom.

Once a theme works on paper we draw the whole family at once: the border, the large cutouts, the small standing pieces and the labels. That is why a set bought in August still lines up with a piece added at the winter break.

What we care about in the material

Paper pieces are printed on heavy card stock and most of them are double sided, because a cutout hanging from a ceiling grid is seen from both directions. Wood pieces are cut thick enough to stand without a prop. Flags are sewn from polyester so a season outdoors does not bleach them flat.

We would rather cut the number of pieces in a pack than thin the stock. A border that curls off the cork in week three costs more time than it saves.

Two calendars at once

Our year runs on the school calendar and on the holiday calendar, and the two rarely line up. A classroom needs back to school in August and a bulletin board that survives until June. A hallway table needs to change nine or ten times a year without a new theme purchased each time.

So we draw neutral bases meant to stay up and seasonal pieces meant to rotate. The planner on this site sorts our shelves the same way.
